This paddle steamer and her sister ship, the 'Prince of Wales', were built of steel in Glasgow, for the Isle of Man, Liverpool and Manchester Steamship Co In 1889, both pased to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co Ltd. They were both used on the fast mail service between Liverpool and the Isle of Man. They had accomodation for 1600 pasengers. In 1915, both ships were purchased by the Admiralty, and were used as anti-submarine craft in World War I.
