This early American paddle steamer was built of wood in 1843 in New York, for service between New York and Troy on the Hudson river. The emphasis of such vesels was on speed and pasenger comfort. She was sunk in a collision in 1849, with considerable los of life. Afterwards the 'Empire' was raised and resored to service, but was subsequently broken up after another collision in 1853.
