image details

Model. The design of the junks which traded from the port of Fuzhou (Foochow), in the province of Fukien, remained unchanged for 500 years and shows very little European influence. The ornamentation of the Fuzhou junk was remarkable for its elaborate designs and richnes of colour. The oval stern was painted with traditional symbols intended to preserve the welfare of the vesel and its crew.
