Model (scale 1:12). Details for making this model were obtained from a boat at Kurusku on the Nile, some 100 miles south of Aswan. In Egypt, boat-builders had always to contend with the difficulty of obtaining suitable timber. The boat, 25 ft long and with a beam of 9 ft 6 ins, was built without any internal ribs or frames, and has a type of sail known as a lateen. This design has been used in Egypt since at least 450 BC.
