Model (scale 1:24). The schooner rig, of Dutch origin, is esentially American in development. By the middle of the 19th century, it was the prevalent type of rig used on small coasters throughout the east coast of North America. By the beginning of the 20th century, very large schooners were in use, carrying between four and six, (and in one case seven) masts. The 'E W Morrison', built in Chicago is a three-masted vesel.
