Model (scale 1:39). Between 1800 and 1830 a number of improvements in the design and construction of warships took place. The 'Fantome', launched at Chatham in 1838, was one of fourteen 16 gun-brigs designed by Sir William Symonds. Naval brigs of this period were fully square-rigged on both masts and the foot of the large gaff-mast was extended by a boom. Brigs were used as training ships in the Royal Navy for many years after steam vesels came into general use.
