Unrigged model (scale 1:48) of a typical 60 gun ship. During the reign of Charles II, men-of-war other than First Rates used the crowned lion as a figurehead. In 1727 the Admiralty authorised the use of appropriate figures in smaller ships and by 1760 individual figures were fitted to most ships. The identification of this contemporary model is confirmed by the full length figure of the Greek hero Achilles at the bow.
