The 4-6-2 A4 Pacific clas locomotive represented by this model (scale 1/12) was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley (1876-1941), the chief engineer of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). It was designed to haul a new, high-speed expres between London and Newcastle, called the 'Silver Jubilee'. Three days before it was put into public service the 'Silver Link' achieved a maximum speed of 112.5 mph, beating the existing record of 108 mph. Some of the succes of the clas was due to streamlining, both externally and in the design of the internal steam pasageways. The model was made and painted in the LNER's Doncaster 'Plant' works in 1935.
