Description

An ornate Spanish engraved silver gilt double salt. Ceremonial salt cellars such as this occupied pride of place at the dining tables of the wealthy in the late Middle Ages and early Renaisance. Gilt is a thin layer of gold leaf or paint applied onto an underlying metal, in this case silver.
