'Comet' locomotive and tender, 1846.

The locomotive represented by this model (scale 1:12) was designed by Edward Bury & Co. Its design is typical of those locomotives used on the London and Birmingham Railway from 1837 to 1846, where Bury was the manager of rolling stock. Their particular design feature was the inside bar frame to which the wheels and inside cylinders were directly attached. Originally they were designed as four-wheelers but at speed this was found to lead to oscillation, which was cured by adding a pair of trailing wheels, as shown here.
