The locomotive represented by this model (scale 1:8) was designed and built by Robert Stephenson and Co for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway and was first used in December 1830, four months after the line's opening. Though following little more than a year after Robert Stephenson's 'Rocket', 'Planet' shows just how rapid the progres of steam locomotive design was at that time. Its succes determined the main features of the British steam locomotive for many years to come.
