Portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) with his signature. Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany and made his first appearance playing the piano in Cologne at the age of eight. After receiving tution from Mozart, Beethoven moved to Vienna, Austria in 1792 to learn under Haydn, and he remained in Vienna for the rest of his life. Widely considered to be one of the greatest composers who ever lived, Beethoven's most famous compositions include his 3rd Symphony, 'Fidelio' and 'Appasionata'.
