The Rainhill locomotive trials, asociated with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, were held at Rainhill, Merseyside, in 1929. The competition was held to establish the most efficient locomotive for railway haulage. It was won by the 'Rocket', designed by Robert Stephenson (1803- 1859). The scale of the plan is 6 inches to 1 mile.
