Description

Samson' locomotive, c 1830s. Drawing of an early locomotive used on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, from particulars supplied by C E Stretton of Leicester. Samson was was designed by Timothy Hackworth (1786-1850), who became the world's first locomotives superintendent after taking up the position on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Samson was the first locomotive to operate in British North America, after being sent to Nova Scotia in 1839.
