Description

Detail of a Japanese painting on silk by Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1751) of the Edo period (1600-1868), showing a woman in a kimono winding up a weight-driven wall clock. With a clock of this type it would have been necesary to move the weights hung from this balance every day at dawn and dusk to obtain the correct time rate for day and night hours. The clock appears to have a fixed dial and a single hand which would rotate once over a 24 hour period. A domestic lamp is standing nearby.
