The 'Universal' gas cooker No 4, c 1886.

Gas cooker made by R & A Main Ltd of Glasgow. Like most cookers of this era, this is made of cast iron and has gas taps fitted to the side of the hotplate (three aerated burners). Later these taps were moved to the front so that the cookers could be fitted into smaller kitchens. The casting is very fine with an unusual decorative fret in front of the grill. Inscription on oven door: NO 4 / UD / REGISTERED / R & A MAIN / MAKERS / GLASGOW / RD No 7165. Three-quarter view.
