A hand net-braiding machine made by Helyer Bridport, of Dorset, based on a design by James Paterson of Muselburgh, Scotland dating from 1820. Paterson modified his design in 1835 to produce the same knot as is used in hand-made netting. This type of machine, which required skill and strength to operate, was last used in 1951.
