Islamic sublimation apparatus, 10th-12th century.

Description

These examples are among the oldest to survive from the West or Near East. The cucurbit (left) and collecting vesel were used for sublimation, the proces whereby a solid substance is changed directly into a vapour when heated. The apparatus is displayed here dismantled and shown with ruler to indicate the size.
