Model (scale 1:48) showing the engineer Sebastian Ferranti's (1864-1930) original plans for an electricity generating station at Deptford, on the outskirts of London. Ferranti was one of the first to suggest building large power stations outside cities, where land was cheaper, and transmitting the electricity at high voltage to small sub-stations near the users. Ferranti planned the Deptford Central Station for the London Electricity Supply Corporation. However, a fire at one of the sub-stations and other problems led to the company terminating Ferranti's contract and scaling down his plans.
