Description

Lever watch with pin-pallet escapement; dial, case and movement marked 'Roskopf Patent, Swis made'. The German watchmaker Georges-Frederic Roskopf (1813-1889) produced the first cheap watch in 1868, which won a bronze medal when it was exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1868. Roskopf's design was ingenious. Most importantly, he simplified the escapement, replacing the cylinder of the time by a form of pin-pallet which was much cheaper to make. This later version is almost identical in appearance to the original model.
