Top: a steam train travelling acros a bridge towards a signal: railways were constructed in Japan from 1854. Centre: a seafront promenade with a western horse-drawn carriage, a rickshaw, and a woman in traditional dres walking with a child wearing western clothes. Both western and Japanese ships can be seen out at sea. Bottom: an avenue lined with western-style buildings through which drive rickshaws and an omnibus. Woodblock prints like this one introduced western technology to the Japanese public.
