Description

Model, made by George Adams, instrument maker to the king. A windlas forms a pair with the capstan. The capstan has a vertical axis and the windlas a horizontal axis but otherwise they are the same machine. Capstans and windlases were often cited as examples of the application of mechanical powers in courses of experimental philosophy.
