London Midland & Scottish Railway poster. Artwork by S J Lamorna Birch (1869-1955). Birch was born in Cheshire, and sought industrial design work at the Lancashire cotton mills. He was self taught except for a period at the Atelier Colarosi, Paris, in 1895. He took the name Lamorna from the Cornish village to distinguish himself from another painter called Birch who, like himself, was working at Newlyn. Birch exhibited at the Fine Art Society from 1906 and at the Royal Society.
