Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), promoting rail travel to the North Yorkshire resort of Whitby, the boyhood home of Captain James Cook (1728-79). The image shows Cook's ship 'Endeavour' leaving the port in 1768, bound for the Pacific on an expedition to observe the transit of Venus, while below, a contemporary view of the same area is shown. Cook's expedition of 1768-1771 culminated in the charting of New Zealand and the claiming of Australia for Britain. Artwork by Andrew Johnson.
