Rivals at Rest, by Roy Wilson.

There is more than artistic licence in describing these two locomotives as rivals. Both the LNER A4 Class designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and Sir William Stanier’s LMS, Princess Cornoation Class were built for the vitally important business of moving passengers quickly and safely between England and Scotland. Not only were both major railways competing with each other for passengers but, by the 1930’s, both road and air transport had also emerged as threats to railway travel.
