A Class 40 diesel-electric locomotive with a 2-6- 4T steam banking engine and a Class 40 diesel with a following train, Shap Summit, Cumbria, 25 July 1964. The change from steam to diesel traction on British Railways proved difficult and locomotive failures were not uncommon. The photograph shows how trains were brought up to the rear of the 'crippled' train to propel it away. Photograph by Tom E Williams.
