"Workers laying track at Wickwar, Gloucestershire, about 1910. At this time all track work was done manually. Workers worked in small teams under a foreman, looking after short areas of track. The workers examined the track twice a day, checking for cracks, loose bolts and worn rails. They also relaid track where necessary. Track was lifted with jacks and put into place by hand. "
