"A photograph by Photographic Advertising Limited. The couple stand, as if outside their house, in front of a painted studio backdrop. This was common practice amongst commercial photographers at the time. The man holds a pipe to emphasise his masculinity, with his arm proprietorially round his wife. This photograph was sold to advertise furniture in a British trade magazine, and also for general use in New Zealand. Photographic Advertising Limited, founded in 1926, created multi-purpose stock images with the potential for selling a range of products. Sophisticated, adaptable and generic, this kind of image gradually fell out of favour as clients increasingly demanded targeted advertising campaigns with specific photographs."
