Cody Biplane, no 304 of 1909 (without engine). Texan-born Samuel Franklin Cody (1862-1913) refined the manlifting kite as a means for military observation. On 16 October 1908 he made the first powered flight in Britain in his British Army Aeroplane No1, using a 50-hp Antoinette engine.
