A bearded man after using hair restorer, magic lantern slide, 19th century.
© National Media Museum / Science & Society Picture Library
A shocked man looks at his reflection in a mirror, holding a tin of hair restorer and instructions which say 'one dressing will do'. One of a pair (see CIN/C000038 - 10296689) of hand-coloured magic lantern slides, the other showing the 'before' scene where he is bald. This slipping slide consists of a glass slide which is moved across another, fixed slide, which is painted with two phases of a simple movement. Black patches on the slipping slide alternately cover and uncover the two phases of movement.
