Cars being taken by train from Scotland to the south. The cost for car and driver between Stirling and Newton Abbot was £55.50, rising to £73 at peak holiday periods - much cheaper than driving. Motorail began in 1955 between King's Cross and Perth. The service between London and Scotland was withdrawn in 1988, and the London-Penzance service ran until 2005.
