Great Western Railway Locomotive 'King Richard I' near Reading West, 18 April 1938. A classic Maurice Earley photograph, which he titled 'Majesty in Motion'. It features the 'King Richard I' on the London to Penzance service. Circumstances combined to provide Earley with a 'ready-made opportunity' for this shot. Work on an underbridge meant that the train was restricted to 15 mph, making it easier to arrest motion, while the weather was sunny, with a northerly wind that blew the smoke and steam upwards.
