Photogravure of a photograph by Peter Henry Emerson, from 'The Compleat Angler', Volume 1, (1888). In the spring of 1887, Emerson stayed at The Rye House at Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire, while carrying out a commission to illustrate a centenary edition of Izaak Walton's' Compleat Angler'. The Rye House plot to murder King Charles II and his brother, James Duke of York, was allegedly hatched in this room in 1683.
