A 42-wagon freight train hauled by Garratt locomotive No 47972, at Lickey Incline near Bromsgrove. The Incline, over two miles long with a gradient of 1:37.7 is the steepest continuous section of track on any of Britain's main lines. The Garratt locomotive, built for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway, is assisted by another Garratt which had once served the London & North Eastern Railway. Photograph by Dr Pat Ransome-Wallis.
