F E Mackay poses with his friend Maurice Earley. The two photographers are at Greenwood signal box near Hadley Wood tunnel, on the London & North Eastern Railway's mainline north from King's Cross. Mackay's folding glass plate camera is mounted on a tripod and is typical of the bulky equipment railway photographers carried in the years before the Second World War.
