Pound (1877-1943) was First Sea Lord and head of the Royal Navy from June 1939 to September 1943. He died from a brain tumour. Churchill (1874-1965) became Prime Minister in 1940, and led Britain during World War II. He worked constantly, and was famous for his determination and inspiring speeches. He was defeated in the 1945 elections, however, but was re-elected in 1951 at the age of 77. Photograph by Jack Esten.
