Description

A jar of Sudan III, a synthetic red dye manufactured by Actien Gesellschaft fUr Anilin Fabrikation, Berlin, Germany (Agfa).The Sudan (or Soudan) dyes were azo dyes introduced by Agfa in 1883-4. The Aktien Gesellschaft fUr Anilin Fabrikation was founded in 1873 by Carl Martius and Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (the nephew of the composer), became part of I.G. Farbenindustrie AG in 1925 and a subsidiary of Farbenfabriken Bayer AG in 1952. Part of a collection of late nineteenth and early twentieth century colorants transferred from the Colour Museum, Bradford, in 1985.
