Crab winch, c 1820.

Crab (small winch for lifting heavy loads), with contrate (crown and pinion) gear, in rectangular iron box frame. It was used to winch up loads from ground level to the different floors of the East India Company's Cutler Street warehouses near St Katharines Dock, London, where it was made.
