Fourcroy (1755-1809) studied animal and plant chemistry and collaborated with Lavoisier to reform the system of chemical nomenclature. From 1784, he was professor at the Jardin du Roi (later the Jardin des Plantes) in Paris. As director-general of public instruction, he instituted reforms in French higher education.
