Photograph by Felice Beato (c 1825-1908). One of the first war photographers, Venetian-born Beato worked with James Robertson in the Middle East and the Crimea, photographing the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny or Great Sepoy Rebellion (1857-1858), and the Chinese Opium Wars. In Japan from 1862, he worked with the artist Charles Wirgman.
