Children in the cab of South Eastern & Chatham Railway class D1 0-4-2 locomotive number 241. The driver is showing them how the locomotive works. Many young boys dreamed of becoming a driver, thinking of it as an exciting and romantic profession. However, in reality driving a steam locomotive was hard and dirty work. It was uncomfortable for the driver who had to stand all day, and could be either too hot from the fire or too cold from the wind.
