Description

Women workers making barrels and hose pipes at Doncaster works. At this time there were fewer women working on the railways than men, and they were on lower pay and in traditionally female roles such as cleaning and catering. However, during the First World War many male rail workers joined the army, so women were employed in their place, in a variety of roles such as blacksmiths, welders and electricians.
