Workers constructing carriages at Doncaster carriage works. At this time carriages were made from wood. Carriages had corridors by this time and it was possible to walk from one carriage to another. Carriages were usually lit with gas. However, electric lighting was becoming more common as gas lighting was dangerous and could potentially cause a fire.
