Photograph by Lynn Patrick of a Eurostar locomotive being built at Metro Cammell's works in Birmingham. Eurostar trains are electrically powered, with a power car at each end and 18 carriages. They are capable of speeds of up to 180 miles per hour. The journey between London's Waterloo Station and Paris' Gare du Nord takes 3 hours. Based on the successful French TGV design, these trains began running between London, Paris and Brussels in 1994. Any conventional high-speed line is likely to have trains of a similar design.
