Drawings of "Rocket", "Novelty" and "The Northumbrian" locomotives, on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, 1831. "Rocket" and "Novelty" were both entered into the Rainhill Trials in 1829, to decide which locomotive design would be the best to use on the L&MR. "Rocket" won the competition, but "Novelty" was also used on the L&MR. "The Northumbrian" was a larger and more advanced version of "Rocket", and hauled the first train on the L&MR on 13 September 1830.
