Inter-City Train emerging from Box Tunnel, Wiltshire, by Chris Hogg, 1996. The tunnel, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is two miles long and when it was built between 1836 and 1841 it was the longest tunnel in Britain. Over 1500 men and 100 horses worked on the tunnel. Tunnel-building was dangerous, however, and nearly 100 men were killed during its construction.
