Vicar Noel Mellish (d 1962) who had been awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery during World War I, interrrupted a dance at midnight which was being held at St Mary's Parish Church, Dunmow, Essex. 'He was dressed only in pyjamas, and stated that the noise from the neighbourhood of the dance hall, had awakened him, 100 yards away. The dance was stopped immediately, although scheduled to finish at 1 am.'
