Head and shoulders portrait of British feminist and social reformer Eleanor Rathbone (1872-1946). Original caption reads: 'elected today with Sir Martin Conway for the English combined universities.' Rathbone was independent MP for the Combined English Universities, and a campaigner for family allowances and the cause of women's rights. She studied the position of widows under the poor laws, advocated votes for women, and denounced child marriage in India.
