Head and shoulders portrait of British feminist and social reformer Eleanor Rathbone (1872-1946). Original caption reads: 'A new photograph of Miss Eleanor Rathbone, who has been returned as the independent member for the combined English universities.' Rathbone was independent MP for the Combined English Universities, and a campaigner for family allowances and the cause of women's rights. She studied the position of widows under the poor laws, advocated votes for women, and denounced child marriage in India.
