British feminist and social reformer Eleanor Rathbone (1872-1946) walking down the street alone, wearing a black coat and hat and carrying a handbag. The original caption reads: 'Miss Eleanor Rathbone (English universities) leaving the Houses of Parliament after reserving her seat early this morning.' Rathbone was independent MP for the Combined English Universities, and a campaigner for family allowances and the cause of women's rights. She studied the position of widows under the poor laws, advocated votes for women, and denounced child marriage in India.
